Mr. Henderson To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the level of public investment as a proportion of gross domestic product.

Mr. Major In 1987–88 public sector capital spending, as defined in table 2.10 of volume I of the 1988 public expenditure White Paper, is estimated to be about 5.5 per cent. of gross domestic product.
