Below is the text of Mr Major’s written Parliamentary Answer on Company Borrowing on 29th July 1988.

Mr. Chris Smith To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the proportions of total borrowing by companies during the past six months, represented by (a) funds required to finance mergers and takeovers, (b) funds for investment in new plant, machinery, research and development and training and (c) funds for other purposes.
