Press Release – Prime Minister’s Comments on the Labour Party – 15 March 1992

Below is the text of the Conservative Party Press Release on the Labour Party. It was issued on Sunday 15th March 1992, reference 412/92.

WHAT DO LABOUR STAND FOR?

“Mr Kinnock said we would be better off if Labour had been elected in 1983. This gives us the clearest insight for some time into what he really believes”, the Rt Hon John Major MP (Huntingdon), the Prime Minister, said today.

“In 1983 Labour wanted to withdraw from the European Community. They were in favour of unilateral disarmament. They wanted to close down American nuclear bases. They wanted to reintroduce exchange controls and protectionism. They still favoured mass nationalisation.

And they wanted absolutely uninhibited trade unions with no controls to protect either the public or ordinary trade union members. The truly astonishing part of what Mr Kinnock has said is that those policies are the policies he says he has dropped.”

“The public must be baffled. How on earth can they know what Labour stands for?”
