Below is the text of the Foreign Secretary’s, Douglas Hurd, doorstep interview in London on Thursday 17th February 1994.

INTERVIEWER:

When the Russian President outlined his plans to send Mr Cherkin on his mission to the Serbs, the British Prime Minister urged him on, tonight Ministers were greeting the result as an excellent development.

FOREIGN SECRETARY:

This fits in admirably it seems to me with the NATO initiative, they fit well together and if this works out on the ground there is now a much better chance than before of avoiding air strikes because the heavy weapons will have been withdrawn or controlled.
