Below is the text of Mr Major’s Parliamentary written question on Young Persons (Training Opportunities), published on 24th February 1981.
Mr. Major Asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he plans to meet the chairman of the Manpower Services Commission to discuss training opportunities for young people in the defence industries.
Mr. Alexander W. Lyon Asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will make a statement on any proposals he is considering for providing training in military service for young unemployed.
Mr. Banks Asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he anticipates any change in the numbers of school leavers being given work experience in the defence industries.
Mrs. Renée Short Asked the Secretary of State for Employment, further to his reply to the hon. Member for York (Mr. Lyon), Official Report, 4 February, c. 138, if he can now make a statement on the Ministry of Defence’s participation in the youth opportunities scheme.
Mr. Prior I understand that the Ministry of Defence provides a large number of apprenticeships for young people and also sponsors 97 schemes in the youth opportunities programme. The Ministry of Defence is considering what additional help it might offer unemployed young people and I would expect any proposals to be discussed with the Manpower Services Commission.
