Below is the text of Mr Major’s written Parliamentary Answer on Commemorative Coins on 25th July 1990.
Mr. Hanley To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if Her Majesty’s Government plan to issue any new commemorative coins.
Mr. Major Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to approve my recommendation that a 50p coin be issued featuring a special commemorative design to celebrate Britain’s presidency of the Council of Ministers in 1992 and the single European market. In addition to circulating versions of the coin, collectors’ version will be issued in base metal, silver and gold.
