Mr Major’s Doorstep Interview in Munich – 5 July 1992

Below is the text of Mr Major’s doorstep interview in Munich, held on Sunday 5th July 1992.

QUESTION:

Prime Minister, what do you hope to get out of this summit?

PRIME MINISTER:

We have a number of things to discuss in the summit over the next day or so. Clearly we will want to look at the generally rather sluggish state of the world economy, I think there are some other matters beyond that, clearly there will be discussions about the Uruguay Round in private, I think undoubtedly we will need to look at a follow-up to the Rio summit on the environment, and I think too a number of matters related to the former Soviet Union, firstly the question of assistance with their economic problems, but also I think the question of nuclear safety across Eastern Europe and in the Soviet Union. All those matters I think will come up.

QUESTION:

What sort of message do you think the summit needs to send out on the world economy?

PRIME MINISTER:

I think I would prefer to have the discussions first and make the comments about it afterwards, but clearly we will need to look at it.

QUESTION:

Are you disappointed that after the personal commitment you asked for on GATT last year that we are in exactly the same place one year on?

PRIME MINISTER:

I have just made that point a moment ago that that is one of the matters we will have to discuss and I have no doubt that we will be discussing it.
