Mr Major’s Comments on the Single Currency – 16 April 1997
The text of Mr Major’s comments on the single currency, made on 16th April 1997.
PRIME MINISTER:
It would be splendidly decisive they say, so splendidly decisive, you would send a British Prime Minister naked into that conference chamber with nothing to negotiate and nothing with which to wring the best deal for the United Kingdom. What I am saying is that no-one in this room doubts that these are the most important negotiations we’ve had. Whether you agree with me or disagree with me, like me or loathe me, don’t bind my hands when I am negotiating on behalf of the British nation.
