Mr Major’s Comments on the Leadership Election – 23 June 1995
Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on the Conservative Party leadership election, made in Huntingdon on 23rd June 1995.
PRIME MINISTER:
The programme that I have in this constituency this morning illustrates one of the main reasons why I think it is right to hold a leadership election now and to sort out these fevered mutterings that we’ve had that have so excited so many people over the last two or three years.
What has happened in the last three years is that the real political agenda, on education, on health, on the economy, on jobs, has just been absolutely extinguished by the chatter we’ve had about the leadership of the Conservative Party. Well, I’ve had enough of that to be frank.
