Mr Major’s Doorstep Statement on the Situation in Bosnia – 4 April 1991

Below is the text of Mr Major’s doorstep statement on the situation in Bosnia. The comments were made outside 10 Downing Street on Thursday 4th April 1991.

PRIME MINISTER:

In recent days there has been growing evidence of human rights abuses at the camps in Bosnia. I think everyone who has seen or learnt about those issues will be shocked. It is perfectly clear that those abuses have to be stopped and have to be stopped speedily.

I believe the first thing that is necessary is to have independent observers in those camps, with full access, without delay.The moment they are there we must move further and make sure that those camps come under international and independent supervision. We will be promoting a resolution in the Security Council to his effect and promoting that resolution very speedily.

I believe there are two other things that follow. We need to pull together internationally all the evidence that different nations have of abuses so that those responsible for those abuses can be caught, can be tried and can then be brought to book. And of course, in addition to that, it is necessary for us to continue with the Security Council resolutions to protect the humanitarian supplies that are presently going into Sarajevo and elsewhere. It is essential that those continue.
