Mr. Gordon Brown Asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the proportion of unemployment benefit to average male wages in 1979 and in 1986 or the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Major I refer the hon. Member to Table 5.3 in the “Abstract of Statistics for Index of Retail Prices, Average Earnings, Social Security Benefits and Contributions” a copy of which is in the Library.
