Mr. Patrick Thompson To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff in post in central Government Departments at 1 October.
Mr. Major At 1 October 1987 there were 585,070 staff in post in central Government Departments. Of these, 509,133 were non-industrials and 75,937 were industrials.
