Mr. Tony Banks To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his current estimate of the contribution made by the arts to the balance of payments figures.

Mr. Major No comprehensive official estimate is available. Overseas income and expenditure relating to cultural activities enter directly or indirectly into many components of the balance of payments, especially travel and film and television services.
