Mr Major’s Comments on the End of the Gulf War (I) – 28 February 1991
Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments made on Thursday 28th February 1991.
PRIME MINISTER:
[Mr Major was asked why he wasn’t using terms such as victory and surrender]
The war is over – I think that is the important point. It is over and it is over very satisfactorily. I don’t think anybody takes any pleasure in war – I certainly don’t and I don’t think most other people do. The predominant feeling in this country, I believe, will be satisfaction that it is over, relief that so few people were killed in the conflict and a hope that now it is over that we can find a lasting peace.
