Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on Saddam Hussein, made on 8th January 1993.

PRIME MINISTER:

We’ve told Saddam Hussein. He’s been told quite clearly by the Allies that we wish to ensure the safety of the no-fly zone. Firstly he must honour the no-fly zone. There must be no more flying in it. And secondly, he must remove the SAM missiles. That’s made clear to him, he knows that and set a time frame for it. I hope he will comply.
