Mr Major’s Comments on Scotland – 30 January 1993
Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on Scotland, made during his visit to Scotland on 30th January 1993.
QUESTION:
[Mr Major was asked why jobs were coming to Scotland, and whether it was related to the Social Chapter opt-out].
PRIME MINISTER:
It’s an attractive place to live, it’s an attractive environment to do business. We’ve one of the best corporate and company taxation systems that you’ll find anywhere in the world. And you mention the Social Chapter. I strongly suspect the fact that we are not going to implement a Social Charter which, in practice, puts extra costs on jobs and employment, is one of the reasons that there will be an extra 450 jobs in Scotland.
