The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH

Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1990-1997

1993Prime Minister (1990-1997)

Mr Major’s Comments on Northern Ireland – 26 March 1993

Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on Northern Ireland, made on 26th March 1993.

QUESTION:

[The Prime Minister was asked about the situation in Northern Ireland]

PRIME MINISTER:

What we are seeing, and it has been very dramatically illustrated after the events of the last few days, is the intense revulsion that exists right across the spectrum in the United Kingdom, in Northern Ireland, in the Republic of Ireland against the activities of the terrorists. I think there is a spirit, a movement, a belief that these people are evil and that their cause does not justify the way they behave. I think that is spreading. The attitude and feelings amongst the people of Northern Ireland has increasingly been moving towards the need to find a secure and peaceful settlement. That is very attractive and I hope it continues.
