Mr Major’s Statement on the Situation in Russia – 3 October 1993
Below is the text of Mr Major’s statement on the situation in Russia, issued on 3rd October 1993.
PRIME MINISTER:
President Yeltsin has my sympathy and support in dealing with the difficult situation in Russia. He has received a democratic mandate from the Russian people at the ballot box in this year’s referendum and last year’s Presidential election.
He deserves the support of all democrats, inside and outside Russia. Those who have mounted today’s ugly attacks in Moscow have no respect for civilised and democratic behaviour.
I hope that law and order will soon be restored. This will allow Russia’s progress towards new Parliamentary elections and stable democracy to continue.
