Mr Major’s Doorstep Interview at Yad Vashem – 13 March 1995

Below is the transcript of Mr Major’s doorstep interview following his visit to Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on Monday 13th March 1995.

QUESTION:

Prime Minister, can you share your feelings with us after your visit?

PRIME MINISTER:

It is difficult to express very clearly and succinctly the variety of emotions you feel in seeing this remarkable monument. I suppose that I have just written in the book illustrates the point: “Those who forget the past may be condemned to re-live it”, and I think it is right to remind people of precisely what happened, precisely the depths of horror that can occur. And I believe that the memorial here expresses that very vividly, I have heard a great deal about it, I had not seen it, I have now seen it and I very much doubt that I will ever forget it. So I am delighted to be able to be here today.
