Mr Major’s Doorstep Interview in Halifax – 15 June 1995

Below is the text of Mr Major’s doorstep interview in Halifax on Thursday 15th June 1995.

QUESTION:

Prime Minister, what are your objectives at this summit? Are you going to reform every other institution but yourselves?

PRIME MINISTER:

I think we are going to look at reform in a number of areas, quite how far we will get I think it is impossible to say. But we committed ourselves last year to having a look at some of the ways in which the United Nations can reform. I don’t think you can expect everything should be turned upside down, that is not the business we are in, but I think there is some progress we can make. And I think we will want to look also at employment prospects across the Western world. There are a whole range of matters like that but we will deal with those later.

QUESTION:

Chancellor Kohl is concerned about the dumping of the Brent Spar oil platform, I think he is going to talk to you about it, is there a chance you will change your views on that?

PRIME MINISTER:

I am always happy to talk to Chancellor Kohl about any matter, but so far as I am aware the disposal of the Brent Spar is in accordance with international law, there are agreements about that, those agreements have been met, that is the way it is going to be disposed.
