Mr Major’s Comments on Weapons Decommissioning in Northern Ireland – 8 September 1995

Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments made in Northern Ireland on 8th September 1995.

PRIME MINISTER:

What we are asking of Sinn Fein and of the Loyalist paramilitaries as well, both of them, is that they agree a method of taking the gun out of politics. That they agree decommissioning, the removal of weapons from Northern Ireland politics, and then that they begin to move down that decommissioning path because the other political parties will not sit in round-table talks with them until that happens.
