The text of Mr Major’s comments on grant-maintained schools, made on 21st April 1997.
PRIME MINISTER:
At the moment, a large amount of money is siphoned off by the education authority. Some of it does need to be as there are some things the education authority needs to do for the schools. But there’s a huge variety across the country about how much is creamed off by the local education authority. And that means that many schools are not actually getting the money per pupil that the Government intended them to get per pupil.
