Sir John Major’s Statement on the Mull of Kintyre Crash – 13 July 2011

The text of Sir John Major’s statement on the Mull of Kintyre crash, issued on Wednesday 13th July 2011.

SIR JOHN MAJOR:

The crash into the Mull of Kintyre in 1994 was a terrible tragedy. Many lives were lost, and many families left bereaved. It was especially painful for the families of the two pilots who were blamed for the accident.

The evidence to support this decision – although taken in good faith – was always questionable, and we may never be certain what happened. In these circumstances, I warmly congratulate Liam Fox for exonerating the pilots from blame. Natural justice demanded this outcome, which I am sure will be a great comfort to their families as they – and others – continue to mourn the loss of the brave people who lost their lives over the Mull of Kintyre, in the service of their country.
