Sir John Major’s Statement on the Death of President Jacques Chirac – 26 September 2019

The statement issued on Thursday 26 September 2019 by Sir John Major, following the death of former French President Jacques Chirac.

President Jacques Chirac of France was always prepared to be a friend and partner of the United Kingdom.

He sat in the Centre Right of politics, and was unattracted by extremes.

An engaging man, and a supreme politician – but one whose mind could be changed by facts, by persuasion, or by circumstance. Although he was forever impulsive – and often brave – once he gave his word it was, in my own experience, invariably honoured.
