Mrs. Beckett Asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on ministerial responsibility for the proposed social fund inspectors.
Mr. Major [pursuant to his reply, 26 January 1987]: My right hon. Friend will be responsible for making persons available to the social fund commissioner for appointment as social fund inspectors, and for issuing any general directions and guidance on reviews of social fund decisions. The commissioner will be responsible for appointing the inspectors, arranging their training, monitoring the quality of their decisions and giving them any advice or assistance needed to improve the standard of those decisions. The commissioner will also report annually to my right hon. Friend on the standards of review by inspectors, and my right hon. Friend will publish his report.
