The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH

Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1990-1997

1993Prime Minister (1990-1997)

Mr Major’s Comments on the Downing Street Declaration – 15 December 1993

Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on the Downing Street Declaration, made in London on 15th December 1993.

PRIME MINISTER:

It makes no compromise on strongly held principles, but it does embody our common view that there is an opportunity to end violence for good in Northern Ireland. We believe that it is now up to those who have used, or supported, violence, to take this opportunity. The door is open to them, they won’t have a better opportunity and they don’t have a better option.
