Mr. Fearn To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the implications for the economy of the current state of British manufacturing industry.

Mr. Major The current state of British manufacturing industry is excellent, with strong growth in output, productivity and exports in 1987. We expect further healthy expansion in 1988.
