Mr. John D. Taylor To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has made any representations to the European Community about the proposal by the Government of the Republic of Ireland to impose a 36-hour restriction on its residents shopping in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Major Her Majesty’s Government are urgently considering the implications of the proposal which has just been tabled by the Government of the Republic of Ireland. The Government continue to support the Commission’s proposals for significant increases to the travellers’ allowances in the period up to 31 December 1992.
