The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH

Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1990-1997

1993Prime Minister (1990-1997)

Mr Major’s Doorstep Interview at Kuala Lumpur – 21 September 1993

Below is the text of Mr Major’s doorstep interview held in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday 21st September 1993.

QUESTION:

Prime Minister, they seem to have made a little bit of progress at the Jumbo meeting, do you think we are now looking at a fast track deal being ready for 15 December?

PRIME MINISTER:

I think it was a very satisfactory outcome in Brussels, very satisfactory indeed. It means the Commission can continue to negotiate without any special fetters, it means the Blair House deal is not going to be reopened and we are on track for a 15 December settlement.

QUESTION:

Do you think there are still dangers that the French could still scupper the deal?

PRIME MINISTER:

I would not put it in those terms, I think there are many difficult decisions still to be made and no-one should doubt that the French have difficult internal problems. But I think what they know, and everybody else knows, is that whilst a success will be very good news indeed, the price of failure would be very high for all of us.
