Iraq

Mr. Dalyell : To ask the Prime Minister if he will seek to arrange for a senior official of the Foreign Office to visit the marshlands of Iraq, in the area where the Tigris joins the Euphrates, to be accompanied by a medical officer experienced in water-borne malnutrition-related diseases and an expert in water filtering and pumping equipment.

The Prime Minister [holding answer 14 April 1994] : Many international organisations and humanitarian workers have sought to visit these areas to aid civilians. However, Iraq has consistently refused to permit access, despite the fact that this is in contravention of the United Nations Security Council resolution 688.
