PRIME MINISTER:

 

Engagements

Mr. Harry Greenway : To ask the Prime Minister if he will list his official engagements for Thursday 18 July.

Mr. MacGregor : I have been asked to reply.

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister is conducting bilateral discussions with President Gorbachev.

 

Tesco, Sheffield

Mr. Bill Michie : To ask the Prime Minister if he will make an official visit to Meadowhead, Sheffield to discuss with local residents and the developers of the proposed Tesco’s superstore the implications of his newly announced environmental initiatives for such developments.

The Prime Minister : I have at present no plans to do so.

 

United Nations Environment Conference

Mr. Flynn : To ask the Prime Minister what proposals will be put forward by Her Majesty’s Government to the United Nations conference on environment and development in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.

The Prime Minister : We are consulting widely in order to prepare our position towards the United Nations conference on environment and development, in particular the proposed action plan, agenda 21, which will be discussed at the preparatory committee next month.

 

Manchester Olympic Bid

Mr. Alfred Morris : To ask the Prime Minister what is his policy on further help for Manchester’s bid to host the Olympic games ; and if he will make a statement on both the help so far given and that which might be considered.

The Prime Minister : The Government welcome Manchester’s bid to host the Olympic games. The Minister for Sport has already met the chairman of the bid committee and representatives of the British Olympic Association and has assured them that the Government stand ready to discuss ways in which it might help promote the bid. I plan to meet representatives of the bid committee in September and will consider any suggestions they may have.

 

Youth Training

Mr. McLeish : To ask the Prime Minister if he will list (a) the number of youth training places in the Cabinet Office and (b) the number of places occupied in May for each of the years 1989, 1990 and the current year.

The Prime Minister : There have been no youth training places in the Cabinet Office. However, an active work experience programme for 15 and 16- year-olds has been in operation for several years.

Mr. McLeish : To ask the Prime Minister if he will list (a) the number of youth training places in his office and (b) the number of places occupied in May for each of the years 1989, 1990 and the current year.

The Prime Minister : There have been no youth training places in my office.
