PRIME MINISTER:

Treaties

Mr. Allen : To ask the Prime Minister how many treaties have been ratified by Her Majesty’s Government since 1979.

The Prime Minister : Her Majesty’s Government have ratified 243 treaties since 1 January 1979.

St. Bartholomew’s Hospital

Mr. Sedgemore : To ask the Prime Minister what representations he has received from the City of London about the proposal to close the accident and emergency department at St. Bartholomew’s hospital.

The Prime Minister : So far as I am aware, none.

Orders in Council

Mr. Allen : To ask the Prime Minister if he will list the statutory powers which have authorised the use of the Orders in Council in the last six months.

The Prime Minister : Since 1 November 1992, Orders in council have been made under the following Acts and Measures :

Public Servants

Mr. Allen : To ask the Prime Minister how many persons have been appointed to grades 1 to 7, or equivalent grades, in the civil service since 1979.

The Prime Minister : Since 1979 there has been about 1,250 grade 1 to 3 appointments in the home civil service. This figure includes those appointed from within the service.

About 4,000 recruits have entered the home civil service at grade levels 4 to 7 during the period. This figure excludes promotions from within the civil service, on which information is not readily available.
