Below is the text of Mr Major’s written Parliamentary Answer on Benefits on 19th January 1987.

Mr. Meacher Asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the average expenditures per week on food for the following supplementary benefits claimants: (a) an adult, (b) a person 16 to 17 years of age, (c) a child 11 to 15 years of age, and (d) a child under 11 years of age as recorded by the “Family Expenditure Survey” in 1984; and what are these average expenditures, adjusted for inflation in 1985 and 1986.

Mr. Major I regret that the information could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
